Jensen-Cars FAQ -- Mailing List

Is there a mailing list for Jensens?

Yes. It's called Jensen-cars.

Does it cost anything?

No. There is no charge to participate on the Jensen-cars mailing list. If you pay for your connect time or throughput, then your connection charge might increase slightly but subscribing to the list is free.

List Instructions (brief):

<jensen-cars-on@british-steel.org> "-on"
<jensen-cars-digest@british-steel.org> "-digest"
<jensen-cars-off@british-steel.org> "-off"

Instructions are very easy. Above this paragraph, you'll see three different addresses. Just send a message to the '-on' address to subscribe, to the '-off' address to unsubscribe. If you want to switch to the digest format, send a message to the '-digest' address. To switch back to real time (not the digest format), send a message to the '-on' address. It's that simple.

Please help me make sure that any instructions are current. If you run across any that don't match these, please send me mail including the URL for the page that has the out-of-date information.

How do I subscribe?

To subscribe to Jensen-cars in list format, send a message to <jensen-cars-on@british-steel.org>. This is referred to as the '-on' address (see the '-on' before the '@' sign?). Don't bother putting anything in the subject or message body as it will be ignored by the server. Be sure to send this from the address you wish to subscribe with.

As soon as the server receives and processes your subscribe request, it will send you a welcome message. Read and save the message as it contains important information such as how to unsubscribe, list etiquette and much more.

How do I subscribe to the digest?

<jensen-cars-digest@british-steel.org> (referred to as the '-digest' address) is that address to switch to digest format. Just send a message to the '-digest' address and you'll be added or switched to the digest subscriber list for Jensen-cars. Everything in the subject line and message body are ignored.

As with the '-on' address, you should receive a confirmation message from the server shortly after sending a message to the '-digest' address. Read and save this message. The message contains important information ... such as how to unsubscribe, list protocol and much more.

Keep in mind that digest issues are sent once per day around 2:00 am (Pacific Time) and are limited to 28 KB in size. As the server collects messages for the digest, it'll send out an additional issue if the collection reaches 28 KB in size.

How do I unsubscribe?

<jensen-cars-off@british-steel.org> (referred to as the '-off' address) is the unsubscribe address. Send a message to this address and your address will be removed from the Jensen-cars subscriber list. Everything in the subject line and message body are ignored.

You'll receive a confirmation message informing you that your address was successfully removed.

What is the difference between Real-Time and Digest?

Real-Time format (sometimes referred to at list format) means that you receive each message individually. If sixteen messages are sent to the list in a particular day, then you'll receive sixteen individual messages.

By switching to the Digest format, you elect to receive a bunch of messages all bundled into one large message. Instead of receiving sixteen individual messages (above example), you would receive just one large digest issue for that day.

Switching formats is easy. Just send a message to the address that you wish to switch to. If you receive Jensen-cars in Real-Time format and would like to switch to digest, just send a message to the '-digest' address. If you receive the list in digest format and wish to switch to Real-Time, just send a message to the '-on' address.

How do I switch from Digest to Real-time format?

To switch from Digest format back to real-time (to individual messages) format, just send a subscribe command to the list machine. See the section "How do I subscribe to the list?" The list software is smart enough to realize that you're a digest subscriber and switch you over to being a real-time (list format) subscriber. The upshot of this is that you can't subscribe to both list and digest format with the same email address.

How do I send a message to the list?

To send a message to the list, you have to address the message to the "list address" -- <jensen-cars@british-steel.org>. Keep in mind that you have to be a subscriber or your message will be rejected.

Troubleshooting

Why Can't I Post to the List?

The Jensen-cars mailing list is set up such that only subscribers can post to the list. More accurately, the list software requires that the sender's email address be in the subscriber list. If you are subscribed with your home address, then your work address is not considered to be a subscriber.

It's also possible that your email address has morphed since you subscribed. I had an ISP once that liked to change the subdomain of my address every so often. I would subscribe to a list and they'd make my address look like <user@monday.domain.com> and the next week, they'd change it so that my address would look like <user@tuesday.domain.com>. This meant continually having to fix my mailing list subscriptions.

Is the server down? How do I send a test message to find out?

Please don't bombard the list with test messages. If you feel the need to determine whether the server is running, send a 'help' command. To do this, address a message to <requests@british-steel.org>. No need to put anything in the Subject or Body of the message as it'll be ignored.

I'm not receiving any messages. What's going on?

Any number of things could be going on here. Your account might be over quata causing your ISP to reject messages. I've seen a couple of people who changed their account information in their email clients and were no longer picking up (checking) their account that was subscribed to Jensen-cars.

Another possibility is that your address started bouncing and I removed your address from the subscriber list. For every message that bounces, I receive some form of notification. Jensen-cars does between thirty and sixty messages per day. If your address starts bouncing, that's up to sixty additional messages I receive every day. Now some ISPs do nice, short bounces. If this is the case, then I switch users over to the digest format. That means one or two bounces per day. I can live with that. If the bounces are ugly (the entire message plus an explanation and then some), I simply remove the offending address. I don't want bounces with entire digest issues filling up my mailbox.

If you suddenly stopped receiving list messages, simply re-subscribe to the list (instructions above).

What software do we use?

Update: The PowerBook 1400 died. We're now running on a Power Macintosh 8500/120 with a G3/400 daughter card running Mac OS 9.0.4.

Jensen-cars is hosted on <lists.british-steel.org> which runs on a PowerBook 1400 running Mac OS 9.0 and LetterRip Pro mailing list software.

How do I get back issues of the digest?

Contact the list administrator (that's me). I archive all of the digest issues several times over. Send me a date or issue range that you would like, along with a batch size (number of issues you'd like me to send you at one time) and the frequency of the batches. I prefer to send out digest issues in batches of ten and space them at least several hours apart.
